Establishment of Research Advisory Group
Rothamsted Research North Wyke was delighted to host the first meeting of the North Wyke and Duchy College Research Advisory Group on February 15th.
Established in partnership with Duchy College Rural Business School, this new grouping comprises key farming representatives who will provide industry perspective and specialist advice on the research being undertaken by Rothamsted Research North Wyke and Duchy College Future Farm.
Comprising leading beef, sheep and dairy farmers, as well as nutritionists, vets, agronomists and representatives from farming and environmental organisations including the National Sheep Association, LEAF and West Country Rivers Trust, the Research Advisory Group will help to ensure that the research expertise and state of the art facilities at North Wyke, including the Farm Platform National Capability, can be harnessed to their fullest extent for the benefit of the farming sector.
Speaking after the first meeting, Research Advisory Group member Pauhla Whittaker, who with her husband runs Overtown Farm, an organic beef and sheep in Gloucestershire, was positive about the impact that this closer collaboration can have for the sector. “It is incredibly inspiring, especially at a time when, as a farmer, things can be challenging”.
Head of Site Professor Michael Lee was similarly positive about the day. “The Research Advisory Group launch went very well and the discussions afterwards were exactly what I wished to see with leading farmers and stakeholders enthused about what we are trying to achieve and how they can input”.
Going forward the Research Advisory Group will help strengthen our farming links, aiding dialogue between researchers and farmers to highlight topical issues in agriculture and disseminate research findings and best practise to the wider farming community. The experience and knowledge of the group will be key in helping to shape the research undertaken at North Wyke and Future Farm to maximise its benefit for both academia and industry.
