Robert Sturdy MEP receives petition signed by 72 scientists

A petition signed by 72 scientists and agriculturists voicing their concern over the rate at which established crop protection products are being removed from the market was today presented to the European Parliament by Professor John Lucas from Rothamsted Research.

Congratulations to Winston Bothwell and his team for the recent prize received for second place in the Best Commercial Floral Display category in the Harpenden in Bloom competition 2008.

Sir John Lawes School also received a second place in the competition for their Science Organic Vegetable Garden where Julian Franklin provided advice.

Scientists challenge the public to predict the best way to control disease epidemics

Scientists will be challenging the public this week to pit their powers of prediction against the latest computer simulations. A brand new interactive exhibit will be displayed at the Royal Society’s summer science exhibition that showcases the value of mathematical models in the fight to prevent and control diseases such as bluetongue.


Pest Control for the 21st Century

Professor John Pickett will be delivering a presentation entitled Less Violence and More Sex – Pest Control in the Garden at the event, which is held during National Insect Week on Thursday 26 June at 6pm.


Rothamsted wins gold medal at the Chelsea Flower Show

Rothamsted Research have been awarded a prestigious gold medal at this year’s Chelsea Flower show for their exhibit, “Willow Power”. The exhibit focuses on the National Willow Collection which is based at Rothamsted and on the use of willow trees as a bioenergy crop that could play an important role in combating climate change.
