Andrew Mead

Role(s):
Senior Research Scientist - Head of Statistics
Computational and Analytical Sciences
Harpenden
Summary:

I am interested in, and enthusiastic about promoting, the application and development of statistical (and mathematical) approaches to add value across the wide range of biological research areas at Rothamsted Research mand more widely within life sciences.  Prior to taking up the post of Head of Applied Statistics at Rothamsted Research in April 2014 I worked as a consultant and research statistician (biometrician) at the Institute of Horticultural Research and Horticulture Research International (HRI), and then in an academic position as a research biometrician and senior teaching fellow in Warwick HRI and the School of Lfie Sciences at the University of Warwick.

I have particular interests and expertise in the statistical topics of the design of experiments, statistical regression modelling, and multivariate statistical approaches, and have applied this expertise in a wide range of biological disciplines during my career.  Previous application areas in which I have collaborated have included the modelling of different aspects of seed viability (see papers with Gray, Finch-Savage and Hay), the development of models for various aspects of the weed life cycle (see papers with Grundy, Neve and Benjamin), the design and analysis of (microarray) gene expression studies (see papers with Buchaman-Wollaston, Denby and Eastwood), analyses for a range of entomological challenges (see papers with Skirvin, Bell, Chandler, Kift, Ellis, Emmett, Cole and Collier), approaches to the analysis of plant nutritional studies (see papers with Broadley, White, Rahn, Bending and Greenwood), appraoches to the analysis of plant disease studies (see papers with Clarkson, Whipps, Spence and Entwistle), approaches to the analysis of various aspects of mushroom production (see papers with Noble), and studies on landscape-scale modelling and bioenergy (see papers with Howard and Burgess).

I am also interesed in the development of statistical training courses and materials for non-statisticians, in particular those involved in biological and other life science research.  The provision of such training is critical to ensuring that statistical consultancy and statistical inputs to collaborative research projects are effective in adding statistical value to the research, by providing the biological researchers with an appropriate statistical background knowledge and awareness of the potential for the application of statistical approaches.
