Impacts of different vegetation in riparian buffer strips on hydrology and water quality

This BBSRC SARIC project will test the impact of different vegetation (novel grasses, deciduous woodland, willow bioenergy crop) covers in riparian buffers for controlling losses of sediment, nutrients and pesticides from agricultural land. Buffers continue to feature strongly in policy schemes and option lists for reducing the environmental burden of agriculture in the context of developing pathways for sustainable intensification. The project is founded on detailed experimental work using a plot scale facility at Rothamsted Research North Wyke but will also undertake some preliminary upscaling of the new data on cost-effectiveness to maximise impact.
